TEXARKANA, Texas – February is Heart Health Month, and newborns’ most common birth defect is congenital heart defects.
To honor and uplift mothers and babies affected by the defect, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made partnered with Texarkana’s CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital and Carter Blood Care held a blood drive today for mothers, babies and others in East Texas who needed blood.
NICU Nurse and Volunteer Breeanna Addison said, “Babies in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) oftentimes rely on life-saving blood transfusions to survive, and newborns have a very low volume of blood.
“There are times when we have to do repetitive labs, or there may be situations even with newborns who may have an incompatible blood type with Mom, and they may need a blood transfusion,” said Addison.
Donating blood is one of many ways to support and aid our most vulnerable patients.
Anyone who stopped by to donate blood today received a special treat from Graham Slam Bakery as a thank-you for their contribution.
